Sidmouth Boxing Day Swim

An annual event in the East Devon calendar the Sidmouth Boxing Day swim is a much-loved tradition for participants and spectators alike. The event attracts scores of hardy locals and visitors who brave a dip in the sea at Sidmouth.

The first Boxing Day swim took place in 1985 and has been an annual event ever since. Although the swim is weather dependent, it has only ever had to be cancelled once since it began.

Regular participants say it’s a great way to revive themselves after the excesses of food and drink on Christmas Day! To add to the festive feel and spectacle, many swimmers don fancy dress.

Weather and conditions permitting, this year’s Boxing Day swim will start at 11am on the Esplanade. Sidmouth Lifeboat and Sidmouth Surf Life Saving Club will be on hand to provide on-the-water cover for the duration of the swim.

If you fancy taking part and braving the waves, you’ll need to gather at Sidmouth Sailing Club from 10.30am to register. If you’re planning to spectate our advice is to get to the Esplanade early as it gets pretty hectic on the seafront.

We’ll be watching from the warmth of the hotel and serving mulled wine and mince pies to our guests after the swim.
