Sidmouth Science Festival 2017

The 6th annual Sidmouth Science Festival is already in full swing, but with the programme of activities running through to 15th October, there’s still plenty of activities to take part in.

The Sidmouth Science Festival provides hours of entertaining and thought-provoking events covering every aspect of science.

We’ve picked an event each day which we think you might enjoy if you’re in Devon this week.

Our Moon

A talk on the moon, a visit to the planetarium and a guided tour of the observatory.

When: Saturday 7th October @ 7.15 PM

Where: Norman Lockyer Observatory

Three History Walks Around Norman Lockyer Observatory

A 45-minute history walk around the interesting and historic observatory.

When: Sunday 8th October and Thursday 12th October @ 2:00 PM, Sunday 15th October @ 11:00 AM
Where: Meet at Norman Lockyer Observatory car park

Fungus Identification and Nature Walk

A walk in the woods to identify mushrooms and fungi as well as learn about the natural environment.

When: Monday 9th October @ 10:00 AM

Where: Peak Hill Car Park, Sidmouth

Visit to Lyme Bay Winery

A tour of Lyme Bay Winery and laboratory with a guide.

When: Tuesday 10th October @ 10:00 AM

Where: Lyme Bay Winery, Axminster

Special Festival Geology Walk

A gentle stroll along the Esplanade looking at rocks and learning about Sidmouth’s deep history.

When: Wednesday 11th October @ 11:00 AM

Where: Meet at Sidmouth Museum

Visit to Otter Brewery

A tour of one of the well-known South West breweries to see how beer is brewed whilst still maintaining a sustainable business.

Ice at the Poles and Environmental Change

A talk by Prof Julian A Dowdeswell ScD exploring the nature of polar ice, the climate changes which we are experiencing and how these changes are likely to affect issues such as global sea-level over the coming century.

Drone Demonstration and Race

A demonstration of drones.

When: Saturday 14th October @ 11:00 AM

Where: Sidmouth Cricket Club

The History of Ballooning

A talk by Adam Hart-Davis on ballooning history and the discovery of helium, with a sprinkling of Heath Robinson.

When: Sunday 15th October @ 1:00 PM

Where: Norman Lockyer Observatory
